Larry Gard's Biography

Larry received a B.A. in Theatre from Webster University in 1978. In 1985, he completed an additional 54 hours of study at Indiana University at South Bend, and he received an Indiana State Teaching Certificate with a double major in English and Drama.

A member of Actor's Equity Association, Larry has portrayed over 80 roles for educational, community and professional theatres in Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Arkansas and Virginia. Some of his favorites include Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha for the Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre, Darrow in Clarence Darrow for the Casaday Repertory Ensemble, R.P. McMurphy in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest for Marriott's Mainstage Repertory, Krapp in Krapp's Last Tape for JBC Productions of South Bend, Indiana, Mentieth in Macbeth at the St Louis Repertory, Herbert in I'm Herbert from You Know I Can't Hear You When The Water's Running for the John Rolfe Players in Chesterfield, Virginia, Tommy Flowers in Where Has Tommy Flowers Gone? for the Heirophant Theatre at the University of Notre Dame, and Don in The Universal Language for the Carpenter Science Theatre Company. He has also served as voice and/or on-camera talent for numerous commercials and industrial films in Indiana, Missouri and Ohio.

Larry has directed over 80 plays professionaly and has written 17 produced scripts. One of his original scripts, A Song In The Wilderness, toured the state of Indiana for 5 seasons under grants from the Indiana Humanities Council. In 2002, Larry was commissioned by the Airventure Museum in Oshkosh to write a short play about the Wright Brothers. The script, titled What's Wright with Flight, opened its first production in April, 2003, in Lakeland, Florida, and has also been performed at a variety of venues in Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Washington and North Carolina.

As a composer, Larry has created music for productions of Beauty and the Beast, The Dream in Alys Land, The Sword in the Stone, and Three Women: An Indiana Medley. In 2003, he composed music for 3 additional productions: Tartuffe at the Springer Opera House in Georgia, Richard III for the Richmond Shakespeare Festival, and Frankenstein Lives! for the Carpenter Science Theatre Company. In 2004, Larry composed the score for Insect Club: The Musical, which was produced by the Carpenter Science Theatre Company. Larry taught Introduction To Acting at Indiana University/Purdue University in Indianapolis from 1988 to 1993, and he has been a guest lecturer at Butler University in Indianapolis, at Indiana University at South Bend and at the University of Indianapolis. He served as Northern Indiana Drama Consultant for Very Special Arts from 1982 to 1985, designed the curriculum and instructed acting workshops for junior and senior high school students on the University of Notre Dame campus, and is a past president of the Professional Division of the Indiana Theatre Association.

Larry began applying live theatre as an interpretive technique for museum galleries in 1982, when he co-founded and served as artistic director for the Casaday Repertory Ensemble in South Bend, Indiana. CRE worked with the Northern Indiana Historical Society, the Discovery Hall Museum and the Snite Museum of Art on the Notre Dame campus, developing and producing original scripts to complement and enhance the content of museum galleries.

In 1987, Larry was hired as theater director at the world's largest children's museum, The Children's Museum of Indianapolis - a position he held until January of 1998. In his tenure at The Children's Museum, he wrote and/or directed many productions (adults performing for family audiences) while supervising four performing arts seasons annually in the museum's 350 seat Lilly Theater. He also established a "gallery theatre" program that produced 2-3 productions each year in gallery settings.

In 1993, Larry co-founded and began serving on the executive committee of the Museum Theatre Professional Interest Council of the American Association of Museums, and he served as treasurer and vice-chair until July of 2000. In 1999, Larry was elected to the executive committee of the International Museum Theatre Alliance, and he served until 2004 in a variety of assignments including member-at-large, vice president and president. Larry also served as president of the professional division of the Indiana Theatre Association in 1994 and 1995. Currently, Larry is president of the Richmond Alliance of Professional Theatres (RAPT).

In September of 1998, Larry was appointed artistic director of the Carpenter Science Theatre Company at the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond. In addition to live theatre and storytelling at SMV, the Carpenter Science Theatre Company partners with other theatres to produce well-known scripts, such as Inherit The Wind, that examine the humanity behind the scientific process in a spirit of exploration and discovery. The company has also developed and produced gallery theatre productions for the Virginia Aviation Museum and the Danville Science Center.

Larry lives in Richmond, Virginia, with his wife Marcia Quick and their two cats Hotspur and Peasblossom. Inspired by the scenic beauty and historic architecture in Virginia, Larry began taking photographs in 1998. In January of 2006, he decided to start exhibiting, and to-date has been shown in seven juried exhibits. Also, his photograph Sunset at Raven's Roost is published in The Best of Photography Annual 2006 from Serbin Publications.
